Splitting multilayer TIFFs

A friend has asked me how to split a multilayer TIFF. He has saved a number of photographs in a single multilayer TIFF and can only ever get to the first photograph with the software he is using [some PhotoShop variant I believe]. I have asked for a sample file to play with using my own software but thought there might be an obvious solution out there....?

Thanks!

I started to install some of the bits needed before installing Gimp itself and found it wanted to overwrite some existing stuff on my XP system [XML], so aborted.

Can't afford to chance I might compromise my PC for someone else's problem!

I'll try again on my other Windows Me PC, currently languishing in the attic in my other place. Will report back.
