can anyone advise if there is a way to save all the new words I have added to spellchecker in Word97, o/s Windows 98SE

Yes, search for and copy a file called "custom.dic" - the custom dictionary you have in effect created.

And incidently, you can edit this as you would any other document so that any errors can be corrected.

As you add them from writing a letter they are saved automatically for future use.

If you mean, How do I add them? then I think this is done from Word/tools/options/dictionary, add the words you wish to and click on save. J.
