Speedtouch 585 do I need a software firewall

I have just ordered the Speedtouch 585v6 after reading many praises of it on various forums. The question I have is this:

I believe the Speedtouch 585v6 has an inbuilt firewall, is this firewall active only when the ST585 is running wirelessly or does it also run when the ST585 is connected via the Ethernet cable?

Also, I have run my Netgear DG834 for quite a while with just the windows XP firewall (without any probs) I am wondering if there is any need with the ST585 to run a software firewall or will the ST585 inbuilt firewall be more than adequate, if the inbuilt firewall is not adequate would running the XP firewall along side it be adequate enough?

Hardware firewalls (that work both on wireless and wired connections) only block incoming attempts but not outgoing if you do get a trojen that is sending info out, a software firewall will warn you if a program is trying to access the net and do you want to allow it.
