Speedtouch 576 wireless network issues (aohell)

Hi, i've read in descending horror how others are struggling with identical issues but some strings have become almost impossible to follow. So can you help me?

I have speedtouch 576 and platinum aol. 2 pcs and 1 laptop. I purchased a couple of USB wireless adaptors for the extra computers. The main pc is connected to the router/modem by ethernet. The speedtouch has an apparently foolproof set up disc enabling set up and naming of network, creation of WEP key etc. I selected the option to use it for a wireless network when prompted, etc. The internet connection on main pc works fine. I ran the installation discs for the wifi adaptors on both the other puters, entered WEP key etc and subsequently have an excellent strength signal on both connecting to my network. Yippee. sigh. I cannot connect to aol with either of the wireless pcs. aol just won't work I've spent hours talking to aol, tearing hair out, eating chocolate, etc.

I was told by aol i had unsupported hardware (the adaptors) so i raised an eyebrow and purchased one of the recommended brands a Netgear WG111nar, installed it on one of the wireless pcs and have the same problem.

I noted with interest that someone else said they couldn't file share using their aol wireless network. I was told specifically by aol that "aol must advise you that this wireless connection does not allow file sharing, it is only for sharing the internet connection". Shame it doesn't do the only thing its meant to.

I'm no schmuck, I can do all sorts of things, I can bake my own bread, I have party tricks, but I've been reduced to a wireless weeping moron, my teenage son shakes his head at me in shame, he's had a pc since christmas and can't get on the internet. I'm inches away from throwing it all out the window. Please help. ruby

I'm no expert on AOL. but I don't see why file sharing shouldn't also work. I would disable all wi-fi security until you get the wireless working, and then try WEP or WPA. Also disable all software firewalls until working.

Anyway, as you have got the wired PC working fine, that is one major problem over! Here's a few AOL fixes I have seen on these forums, but don't ask me to explain them , you'll have to just try:

+)KEYWORD : XPSP2 or SECURE FIX to download a relevant important patch from AOL.

+)Log into the router and set the MTU to 1400 for AOL.

+)AOL also issue an alternative WEP key which you must use, I just remember somone finding that it wasn't the WEP key they thought, it was found somewhere else on a web page interface?

the desktop can do mostly what it wants on the laptop
a small number of subdirectories are inaccessible the other way round!

then someone tell me, when i can do all this, why can't i get my good friends similar setup to work....click here

Thank you both for your help. Fundamental problem - hardware and software are both installed by a bit of a twit.

The router's wireless set up relies on a 128bit WEP key. The netgear usb dongle is set by default to a 64bit encryption and has to be changed to work.

You were right, aol were wrong, I can file share. Thanks for giving me heart. My son has visions of midnight porn-trawling (fortunately I can set parental controls without assistance).

I still have a bit of problem though. The first usb adapters I bought are safecom ieee 802.11g wireless lan adapters. Despite seeing my encryption settings error I don't seem to be able to alter the WEP key to 128bit, I've tried, I've clicked on it, then applied but it still doesn't allow access to the network it is connected to. I've treble checked that the settings for SSID, WEP, network type etc are all as they should be. I've tried to manually entering the key too. I might just give up and buy another netgear but I'd love to know where i'm going wrong.

Cheers, Ruby

The encryption algorythms can cause problems, to check this try using hex codes instead of ascii, you'll find some here click here

Hi Keewaam, I am using hex although i did try ascii just to be sure that I wasn't missing anything. Thanks for trying. I think I'm just not holding my face right, or the computer is just enjoying a laugh. Foolproof. Pah.

how can I change the encryption setting on my speedtouch 576 from WEP to WPA=PSK so that my wifi enabled phone can log on to the router and onto aol broadband and the net.

the aol supplied software does not allow this and aol tech help just says "dont do it or you wont connect to the net"

Don't do what aol recommends Ruby, I had the same problem as you and aol tried everything then I gave up.

Aol recommends wep like they recommend this ridiculous version of speedtouch.

go into speedtouch 576 settings in two different ways

1. type in speedtouch.lan in internet explorer
2.go to my network places and select speedtouch 576.

now you have to change the channel unselect automatic and change wep to wpa copy the wpa key and paste it into your wireless device that's it.

Good luck.

Now I have another problem that aol don't care about.

Network errors they told me that my Internet explorer is corrupt- think they are wrong again-think that it just this speedtouch.

to be quite honest I do believe that certain routers are incompatible with certain servers anyway- but speedtouch and aol are like chalk and cheese.

good luck

Stuart
