SPAM n PHISHING Emails - I'm SOOO Sick of 'em

Morning Chaps,
I use Thunderbird as my email client, and this all started as a trickle last November. It's not DOZENS each day, in all 7 mail boxes I have and I'm very tempted just to set up Yahoo accounts or something!!!! I'm being offered Penis enlargement (didn't have one last time I looked...),CNN,Magazine Subs,PayPal advice,Abbey Bank,Bank of Scotland, Halifax, NatWest; then there's the messages from **people** Sexy Lexy, Hot Lips, Man o' Man, the list goes on and ON!!! I've phoned my email provider (not IP)and they said there's nought they could do - just keep the spam filter up to date. That just isn't possible! I don't think I've had and 2 supposedly from the same sender. Does anyone know of a way, or bit of s/ware that will ONLY allow messages in from people ONLY in the address book?

I fully agree. ISP's must get together to stop this abuse - cos that is what it is. I am sure they could trace offenders to source - as they did with the guy that hacked into the Pentagon. I hoe someone knows an easy way of only accepting whitelist people.

You are so right! Yeah - they certainly managed to find him; mind you - all these years down the road, 20-something years after the movie 'War Games', and STILL their IT **experts** haven't managed to secure their highly sensitive sites! Sorry FE if this is erring on the Political.

I've Googled how to stop phishing etc and come up with zilch...

Same problem here. I filter as much as I can through Thunderbird but still feel intruded upon. Some of the subject matters are quite distasteful which is not very nice when your PC is a family one.

I tried Mailwasher click here but couldn't find the motivation to set it up properly so got rid. A number of people on this board advocate it though including VoG.

12 months ago I was boasting that I never get any via my Pipex account; now I'm inundated like you. I never reply to any of them or do anything stupid but somehow the whole wide world of spammers, viagra firms and crooks seem to have got hold of my main e-mail address! I must have made a fatal error somewhere. I have an old Tiscalli account that received literally hundreds a day so it could get worse on my Pipex account yet.

I've set up a second e-mail address on my pipex account but I actually like my current one because it's exactly my name! I don't really want to change it.

I've also set up a hotmail account and might start using that although within a week I have already had one spam e-mail so I guess others are on the way soon.

The problem is not helped by using your name, as this is easy to find by trial and error searches by these spammers. I had got up to about a hundred a day at one stage a couple of years ago. Since changing my e mail address I have never received a single one. My previous address was [email protected], very easy to find with a search. Now I have something so different that I doubt if anyone will happen onto it with so many easy ones to look for. It is only a matter of a few minutes to change it, and a few minutes more to type an e mail out and send it to everyone in your address book. Less than ten minutes in all. If people cannot be bothered to do that then they will just have to put up with the spammers.

Andsome is right, change your email address. I changed mine about a year ago and so far no problems.

yes, I too have read that changing email addys to non-names can work. HOWEVER, 2 of my mailboxes have very ambiguous names; one for the Art society I help to run, the other for buying but STILL I get these bally messages!! So I think it's only a matter of time until those of you that have changed addys start to get this trash again. I just C-A-N-N-O-T understand what joy these perpetrators can possibly derive from generating these! WHY?? W-H-Y ???

Sad b**ers I say...

It is time consuming however.
Ensure that that your E-mail client is removed from the start group.[Click>start>run>msconfig>OK>startup]
Restart the computer
Now the E-mail client is dormant until you manually start the program.

Go on line to you ISP Website and log on.
Go to you mail box and all you mail is there waiting to go out to you.
Edit it there and consign the unwanted to the Blacklist and Spam box .Set up the spam filter
[This varies from ISP to ISP to it will be a bit of a learning curve.
Then fire up your E-mail client program and only the mail you want will come in.
You could where appropriate respond to E-mail whilst logged onto your web box- then keeping the Inbox on the computer clear even more.
So
By keeping the E-mail client dormant until called upon and dealing with your mail on the Web-mail box- will keep you computer clear of all the nasties.
It wont sop it coming your way -now they have your address- but it can be intercepted before it comes home.

I can see this probably would work - BUT as I've said, the 'sender' details are always changing! It seems that I get virtually the same crap from different senders, so I don't think this would work. Unless one's prepared to spend 1/2 n hour daily just dealing with this trash...
