SPAM and Bcc field

Does using the Bcc field for group emails really reduce the risk of SPAM. If so how?

Unless the contents of the Bcc field are not stored anywhere on the machines fo recipients I would have thought that what is entered into the Bcc field is recoverable somehow by malicious scanners?
