It sounds like you have got a duff disc, have any of your friends got a copy that you can try.

I agree sounds like a duff disc if you go to microsofts website and hunt around a bit there is a page to order a SP2 disc from them.
Can post link for it later but am not at my pc at the mo.

Have you tried a defrag prior to installing sp2, and turn off anti-virus.

The CD may well be duff, but as no one else has said...

Before trying SP2,

Close all open programs. Everthing that has the option to exit, (without using CTRL-ALT-DEL type force) including items in system tray, Firewall/AV/messenger/quick time/Etc...(If this makes you feel unsafe, pull the phone socket from the wall)

Empty The (recycle)bin.

Empty internet history/cookies/files etc.

Run error check on the drive with XP on it (probably C:)

defrag your HDD.

Basically get rid of all rubbbish, shut down all that you can.

Then try and put it on.

most install progs say "close all open programs" and SP2 disk also says "disable pop up blocking"

May sound drastic, but it worked for me.
