Soundmax onboard sound problem

Hi all
I recently re-installed XP pro (not clean). Asus M2N-e mobo Nforce 570.The onboard Soundmax ,which was working fine ,no longer works.I get an icon in the sys tray which has a red line thru it saying you cannot use soundmax.I have re installed drivers from Asus and soundmax sites, both analog 32bit and digital 64bit, but to no avail. Also it has an exclamation mark over it in device manager.I have uninstalled the drivers and 'updated ' the driver. Please help.

Is onboard sound still Enabled in the Bios?

Also check, from Start>Settings>Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices>Audio and Voice tabs that your onboard sound is the Default audio device.

The onboard was set to AC'97(didn't work) I changed it to HDD audio(doesn't work)
