when I use the sound recorder in xp to try and record, the play-back is hardly audible, I have tryed turning up volune in the obvous places, any idea's

So the microphone has the mini jack end on it and you are going into the mic in of your sound card

yes and this is the same mic as I used on my old machine with w98 I am now runing xp

Running xp on the same Hardware or new hardware? Sorry about all hte questions but as many details about your system(soundcard etc) and connections are essential

this is a brand new machine, it as three plug holes in the back I have speakers in top one mic in the bottom one, speakers work fine but the play back from the mic recording is very weak
