Sound problem when playing DVD's

The sound when playing DVD's in either the DVD drive or DVD recorder drive breaks up, the picture is fine.
The 'event viewer' shows errors which state the driver detected a controller error on\device\CDRom2 or CDRom1.
When going to the Microsoft Knowledge Base this says typically a failing cable that connects the drive to the computer, however its the same on both DVD drives I have installed and each have seperate ribbon cables connecting to the motherboard.
Sound when playing a CD on the CD drive or the DVD drives is not affected.
Does anyone have any ideas please???

I saw this on a mates computer, solved it by updating and reinstalling the software for his sound card, the newer version of the sound driver solved the issue. Not saying that this is the answer but worth a try.
