Sound lost

HELP! I know that there has been a thread called this before but I don't seem to be able to use the suggested answer. (I use Windows ME) The sounds icon on the task bar has gone, and to restore it I went to Control Panel, Sounds and Multimedia. There is a button there to show the icon on the taskbar but it is permanently "greyed"out and I can't see how to select it. Can someone please tell me what I'mdoing wrong, or is there some other way to restore the sound? Thanks everyone!

Control panel/add/remove programs, click on windows setup and scroll down to multimedia, highlight, select properties, and tick appropriate boxes.
