Sound failure

  WALLFLOWER 10:02 17 Nov 03

I have a 10 month old eMachines270 running Windows XP. Recently the sound from the internal speaker plus the rear external headphones/speaker socket failed. I can still receive sound through the front external socket from CD/DVD player etc. using headphones, and the speakers have been tested on another computer and work properly.
I have checked all internal connectors for tightness and these are fine.
Is this likely to be a hardware or software fault. I can call out the service people but do not want to do so if it is a driver failure etc.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a mixer program? You may have inadvertently muted the sound in one or more sections.

Another point is that some programs, such as Windows Media Player, have a mute facility that might have been enabled, or perhaps you have turned a sound output slider down to minimum.
