Sound Disappeared:Is it the Soundcard?

  ronroam 22:52 29 Nov 04

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 and the sound was OK until recently possibly after I fitted a memory module.

The speakers are OK and the Device Manager says there are no conflicts. I can hear a CD play through either earphones or by putting the speaker lead into the earphone jack.
Apparently I have no PCMC1A Card Socket according to system details that I have looked at.

Do I need a new Sound Card do you think?

I operate on Win 98se.

Is your sound card listed in device manager and shown as working ok?

Simple I know but is your system volume turned up?

If you have the drivers to hand you could try uninstalling your sound card and reinstalling.

You will be able to hear the sound through those jacks because it plays straight off your hardware.

If you have onboard sound you could check your BIOS settings.

1. check volume controls (master and CD)not low or muted.

2. Uninstall / reinstall sound card drivers

Thanks guys. I've reinstalled the Soundblaster driver, though I have'nt uninstalled beforehand. I've checked all the sound controls also.
Still no joy.
How do I access th Bios - excuse my ignorance?

When booting your PC, start pressing the DELETE Button. This will get you into the BIOS.
