Sound corrupted after standby

My system sounds come out as beeps after standby. Any idea how to fix? I can't find anything relevant on the MS KB.

I have XP Home. Everything is fine after a boot, but if I put the system into standby and then resume, the system sounds come out as beeps instead of the correct Windows sounds. If I go to the media folder and play them, they are as they should be. The beeps vary in length and tone, corresponding I think to the correct xounds. Rebooting fixes it.

I have an Audigy ZS Platinum card but at the moment it is only connected to the speakers built into my display.
