sound cards for recording

I am fairly new to computers and have a 3 year old computer with a basic onboard sound chip. I recently decided to try recording from the radio and have quite disappointing results in comparison with mini-disk recordings made from an analogue tuner with a good roof ariel. As I have moved house and no longer have an ariel I need to know whether my best option is a new ariel or a better sound card. Any suggestions?

Are you trying to record "off air" or from your tuner amp?

I am recording from radio 3 on the computer. Sorry if I'm not clear but don't know the jargon. I am recording as MP3 then transfering to CD.
