Sound card problem? Duff sound quality processing

Hello there,

I have downloaded the tryout version of Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro) onto my computer:

OS Me, 128 RAM, Yamaha AC-XG WDM sound card (I think).

My minidisc deck output is connected to the input socket of the PC via a high quality dual pin to single jack cable. My amp, speakers, cables and mindisc deck are all top quality gear, so I'm ruling out the problem of there being a problem with either of them.

When I record through the sound editing software and then listen to the sound being played back through it, there is hiss and the quality has diminshed somewhat.

Is the problem with my sound card?
Is it just plain crap?
Should I get a new one for the kind of professional sound editing I want to do?

Please help.
