Sound card not selected

After a crash a number of devices and programs stopped working. I have recovered most of these except the sound card, SOUNDBLASTER AUDIO PCI 128 on WIN98SE. In PLAYBACK & RECORDING - PREFERRED DEVICE Box NON IS SELECTED. This window is greyed out and will not allow any changes. How do I re-activate this window?

Try reinstalling the sound card drivers.

I have tried re-installing drivers but it didn`t work.

Remove soundcard from DEVICE MANAGER then reboot so windows picks it up and then reinstall card and drivers.

I tried both of the suggestions above without success. I then re-installed Windows and that fixed the problem. My thanks for the help from Totally braindead and Cuddles as it made me think, and to come up with the solution. Thanks again.
