Sorting data by a value within a number - excel

  ShorN 11:00 12 Apr 06

Looking for some assistance.

Have a column of data and each row contains a unique id such as "XX XXX XX" (where each X represents a number)

I want to sort this by the 4th and 5th numbers.
For example

Also in the next column is relevant data to that ID so that would need to be kept in the same row when it is sorted.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Probably too fiddly but you could copy and paste to a new column and use Data, text to columns, fixed width, to split the number into the desired 'bits' and sort on that?

Keep a copy first!

If you create a new cell B1 with the formula =MID(A1,5,2) in it, it will return the 5th and 6th character of the string that's in A1 (i.e. "01" from "XX X01 XX"). Then you can sort the whole lot on column B.

I used the last method, thanks for the help!
