Sorry - Hard Disk Probs Continue

This is from an earlier thread of mine. I have tried everything on the original thread and still nothing.

Basically, there were 2 drives originally. The old Master was removed. I have changed the jumper on the 2nd drive (remaining in the system from Slave to Master using the Fujitsu diagram on the back of the HD casing. I have tried changing the ribbons. Nothing. The PC simply doesnt recognise the drives existence.

I have tried booting to a Win98 boot disc. When I get to the DOS prompt and try to enter the C: drive - it tells me "invalid drive specification". I've even tried installing XP to see how far I can go. The response is NO C: DRIVE.

Looking at the previous thread and now, the one thing that you have not done recently is to try the drive jumper on CSL.

I don't really understand why, but with non recognition of a new drive recently, success was only achieved after setting the jumper to CSL and then in BIOS to Auto.

If you can get that far, the BIOS will at least show your drive as present. Formatting is another thing which may well be OK as you intended, but first your drive must be recognised

1. IDE cable. The connector on the end will be the master connector and the one part way along the ribbon from this one will be the slave. Therefore if your new drive will be the systems only hard disc, or primary (1st) boot disc (drive C normally) connect using the ribbon cables end connector and set the jumpers on the drive to the master position.

2. Once the drive is fixed in position plug a power connector in to it, using an adapter lead if needed. The connector will only fit one way to ensure correct polarity. Observe the corners of the plug to see which way round to insert it.

3. Now connect the IDE ribbon cable to the drive. One edge of the cable will be coloured red or pink. This edge indicates which way round the connector should be inserted in the drive, and also into the motherboard, as this 'strand' connects to pin 1 of both the drive and motherboard connectors. The other end of the ribbon cable should be connected to the IDE channel 1 connector of the motherboard. Channel 2 will have the CD drive connected to it. Do not put different types of drives on a single channel or ribbon cable. They will work, but performance will be greatly reduced. So, channel 1 for hard discs and channel 2 for optical (CD or DVD) drives, unless you have a raid controller on your PC. If so you will connect your hard discs to this instead.

5. You are now ready to start your PC, switch on the PC Watch the screen for message on how to enter setup (del key during booting).

6. On the CMOS screen their may be a key to "auto detect harddrives" or you can select user and input manually the clys heads etc. from the information on the hard drive. NB if the hard drive will not show in the BIOS then a)the cables are loose not connected or faulty b) your BIOS does not supprt HDDs of this size c)the hard drive is faulty (unlikely).

7. Before you can use your new drive you will need to create a partition on it, and then format the drive ready to write files to it. Once this has been done your new drive is then ready for use.

I've run through everything that you guys suggested above.

Fruit Bat /\0/\ - pressing the "del" key produced nothing. The only thing that I could get into was the BIOS - no CMOS. I couldnt find anything the "Auto Detect Hard Drives" so I havent been able to do this. Ribbons are as you have suggested. I'm not too sure about any of this so I've taken small steps. Any more suggestions.

crx1600 - the ribbon is as you mention - at the end.

Diemmess - what do you mean driver jumper on CSL - I'm sure this is simple but so am I.

In BIOS what is showing on first screen?

You need to get into screen for hard drives. It is usually the first option on your initial BIOS screen.

Once in the HDD screen a list of keys will show you how to scroll through the options and one key should be for auto detecting the drives.

With out knowing the make and model of your PC and BIOS (AMI Award Phoniex) cannot help any further at this time.

on the HD there is a jumper setting, usually show as a key lable near the connection end of the HD
The choice is Master, CSL, or Slave. I suggest trying the CSL setting.
