sony viao how to recover?

My sons Sony viao laptop,windows 8.1,has been problematic,hes lost his recovery discs so hes passed it to me to look at,help!

When it boots up there's just a black screen with a "there is no OS" message

Any help appreciated

Hope this Sony help should get you to factory settings. Unfortunately you will lose all data.

Before you do the reset I would open the hard drive compartment and check the drive's connection. It might have had a sharp knock.

I should have added that you can create recovery discs once again after a factory restore. I would do so and keep them safely. I mean that you keep them safely not your son. :)

Cheers he is in the process of selling it hes already purchased himself another with a back up disc
