Sony N21EW laptop periodically crashes

Can anyone advise how to troubleshoot a hardware problem on a Sony VGN N21EW laptop (core duo processor running vista). Ive ruled out software issue since clean installed operating system three times (incl using another friends Sony recovery disks for same model) and each time the same blue screen problem occurs suggetsing its a probable hardware fault. Can't make any sense of the crash messages that appear under the activity log and wondered if anyone can suggest how I go about determining what fault is. Laptop generally runs fine, ie boots up and runs Vista well, but occasionally it takes ages to boot into Vista and then crashes on start up but then next time start up it runs fine. Every now and then it also just hangs when booting up and the gold indicator bar on start up just freezes. I then have to depress the off button for some time to switch off and restart. Its one of those niggling intermittent problems. Ive run some diagnostic tests through Vista and Sonys own diagnostic software but this hasnt shown any problems and no yellow exclamation marks indicating a problem have been noted when opening Device Manager. No software or additional hardware changes or additions have been made to the laptop. Any suggestions would be appreciated or even if anyone can recommend a good repairer in West London area that specialises in Sony laptops. Unfortunatlely my laptop is out of warranty and Sony are asking silly prices to even look at it. Any assistance is appreciated.
