Lights are on but no-one is at home!! the FDD simply will not recognise any disc i put in it. I never even hear it Whirrrrr into action (Chug more like!!). Any ideas

That's usually symptomatic of the cable being connected the wrong way bround.

Yep, check the cable. As Vog says,its the wrong way round.

Can you do another check please as most floppy drives will allow the cable to fit either way, but won't actually work.

with the floppy it's different to the CD drives, in the sense that the red line on the IDE cable should be on the side further away from you. With your CD drives it's on the side nearest to you.
