Sometimes ext. speakers switch 2 hard disk speaker

Sometimes, for no apparent reason, my external speakers stop working and the sound starting coming from my hard disk (lousy sound BTW). I use the very low tech solution of repeatedly switching around the speaker plug-ins on the back of the computer and it actually works after awhile (however, I am not really sure if my switching actually leads to the external working properly). I had this problem before with a previous computer. However, I had the speakers checked and even though old, they work quite well. Just a little annoying. Does anyone a more high tech of fixing this problem? Any advice given is greatly appreciated. BTW, I use the Vista OS if this helps.

Speakers, especially powered ones, and microphones should not be connected or disconnected while the computer is running - switch off computer first.
