Software for organising music files

I've had an email from my grandson with a request for help. I think the simplest will be if I copy what he says:

"...if you can point me to a good website or know someone who knows more it would be excellent. I have bought an external hard drive and currently have a lot of of music on it. It's becoming harder and harder to deal with and Windows media player and iTunes are both not really up to the task. Windows media player takes an age to load when I first start it and iTunes organises all my files in a very strange way. Also neither of them will play the other's format of music so I am forced, for some songs, to hop between the two players which takes up memory and time. Really what I was wondering was if you knew of a player, payed for or free, that can play both M4A format and WMA format and can cope with a very large music library."

Anyone have any ideas I could pass on to him?
