Software or Hardware problem

I am running Windows 7 professional and up until about two months ago everything was fine. The problems I am having are at start up and are becoming more frequent (every other time ). The screen comes up and tells me that Windows needs to repair, if I choose this option then it says that I have added new hardware (I have not). If I ignore and choose to start Windows normally 9 times out of 10 it starts ok. However I now have another irratic problem, the wired usb mouse freezes after start up, I have to manually turn the Computer off and on again to get it to work.

I'd also give chkdsk /r a run in case there's a problem with the drive.

Last time I had a problem similar to that (albeit on W98se lol) it turned out the wired mouse usb connection was loose, I unplugged it and replugged back in and all was then okay. So with pc switched off, I would go round pc checking/reseating all the bits you have plugged in then reboot.
