software needed to back up?

Hi,
am planning to get an external hard drive to back up my system. do you need specific software to do this? i hear mention of acronis on forums here.

also any particular brand of hard drive is beter?

For something as important as a backup, ensure that the software you use for it is reliable. Acronis is very well known and is reliable when used properly. Some others may not be.

have never backed up & my hard drive is getting on a bit.
