Hi I have a Compaq presario A975EM laptop and I am currently experiencing slow wifi speeds compared to another laptop on the same network. My ISP is virginmedia and I am on the 60mb package, I get 60mbs on the wired pc and 40mbs on a ASUS K53U laptop connected to the network but the compaq is only managing 12mbs, I was wondering if it could be a problem with the adaptor which is a Atheros AR5007 any help would be appreciated.

What speed do you get when you wire this laptop to the router. How do you check you download speed?

I get the full 60mbs when connected directly to the router, its only slow when I use wireless, I check it using www.speedtest.net on chrome browser.

I believe it gives you the same speed when the other two computers and devices are turned off. Wireless will never give you the same speeds as wired because of the overheads involved. Having said that speed you are getting is way too low.

Can you try booting your laptop in safe mode with networking and then check the speeds. This will rule out any applications on the laptop causing it.

Check if your your WLan adapter supports 802.11n mode or does it operate on 802.11 b or b/g. 802.11b and 802.11g modes are known to give lower transfer rates.

I get the same speed in safe mode and the adaptor operates on 802.11 b/g

From what I have checked Atheros AR5007 seems to be a 802.11b/g adapter. You can check for a driver update for the adapter.

The theoretical transfer rate for 802.11g is 54 Mbps. Practically you would get around 20Mbps.

If the download speeds still do not match your expectations I would suggest you purchase a 802.11 n wireless usb adapter compatible with your Windows OS which should give you better transfer rates.
