Slow Start-up

I have recently installed a new hard drive after so many problems with my old drive. Finally everything (Windows XP) was working "as sweet as a nut" with start-up taking only 1-2 minutes (I had reduced my start-up programs to absolute minimum).
This morning, however, my PC takes an eternity, after the Windows logo is on the screen. This is followed by minutes of black screen. Eventually everything runs ok. Any ideas e.g. should I start to worry about hardware, motherboard etc ?

Have you examined your Task Manager during startup?

I start it by using keys alt/ctrl/del (XP)
Only available after password screen has cleared I think.

Assumming you mean before the Desktop loads, then sounds like a
1.driver loading problem,
2. Windows file problem
3. corrupt hard drive

1. try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers in device manager
2. run a System file checker click here
3. run check disk on the drive click here
