Recently my system pauses for ages at the saving your settings notice. I have recently installed a new graphics card a Gainward Ge Force 4Ti 4800 SE Ultra/750-8x xp Could this be the cause if so can anyone help or do I have to put up with it.

Check you have the correct drivers for the GX card. I was going to post a few MMC options but I found click here which lists them.

Take spikeychris' suggestions first to see if they help.

Other than that, there was a Windows Update in December last year (I can't pinpoint which one) which caused some w2k computers to take 60 seconds to shut down.

But that was a few months ago and so may not be the cause of your problem. click here to see the thread.
