Slow performance - freezing when on internet

I have a Vaio desktop running XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 7. For the last 2 weeks the performance has been getting slower and slower with the screen freezing when on the Internet. I cannot connect to any of the Microsoft sites either.
Other programs are working ok it seems to be only when I am connected to the net.

Any idea ? When I was using IE6 I didn't have any problems. Should I do a system restore?
Can I remove IE 7 and re-load IE 6 ? I don't have the system disc for windows so how can I do this?

I would go for System Restore to before IE7

try tools>internet options>reset
once back in its original state
download and install ie7pro

If you have Automatic Microsoft up-dates,Remove it. And up-date manually,Its that busy trying to find you up-dates that don't install; So it goes round in circles and uses up a lot of your CPU performance.Check Task manager.Processes.And under Cpu if svchost.exe is using to much of it,Remove the automatic up-dates.

To remove IE7 ,go into add remove,Make sure show up-dates is ticked. Go to IE7 and delete it. It will automatically go back to IE6.
