a Trojan detector program.

Which one.And what security programs do you have installed.

While waiting for help you could go to command prompt and type in sfc /scannow and see if it finds any problems.

Or go into safe mode at start up and run system repair.

Molly, there are loads of potential problems that could cause your laptop to slow down so ideally we need to find what the problem is before some practical advice can be offered. Try this and get back to us with your findings:

1) Make sure your laptop is fully booted.

2) Open all the programs you'd normally use at the same time - for example, your Web browser and e-mail program etc.

3) When you find your laptop's running slow, right-click an empty area of the Taskbar (at the bottom of the screen)and choose "Start Task Manager".

4) When Task Manager opens, click the "Performance" tab.

5) Look at the "Memory" bar graph on the left-hand side and let us know how much memory has been consumed. Also, in the "Physical Memory (MB)" - "Total" section, let us know the value shown.

6) Keep an eye on the "CPU Usage" graph for a minute or two and let us know what the average CPU usage percentage is.
