Slow to load OS X

OK, OK, I know this is a PC forum but maybe someone here knows a little about Macs and is prepared to help.

I have a Bondi Blue iMac on the bottom of which it says 400MHz/512K L2/64MB/10GB/DVD/56.
I'm trying to load OS X (version 10.2) onto it and so far it has taken 14 hours to get to the Introduction part where it still says Reading Packages.... Why on earth is it taking so long? Is this early iMac not suited to OS X?

Thank you.
