Slow Internet Connect through NETGEAR ADSL router

I have an XP Pro SP2 PC connecting to the Internet via a NETGEAR DG834GT ADSL router. There is an external connection, but it is v. slow.
Pinging the router is fine - returns in 1MS etc. so I am happy the network card is OK.

There are 2 other PCs in it's workgroup, and they are both fine when my problem PC is unplugged. However, when the problem PC is attached to the network the other PCs slow up as well.

Does anyone have any ideas? A chocolate bar of your choice to advice leading to a resolution (no king size).

Check what applications are running on the "problem PC". When this is unplugged - the connection is fine so I would say that some programs (possibly spyware/adware/etc) are accessing the internet with lots of traffic.

Try this:-

(1) on the "problem PC", click start/control panel/network connections.

(2) double click on the LAN connection and see what the traffic is like (packets sent and received).

If this is high then there is a lot of internet/network traffic coming from the "problem pc".
