Slow to get past Windows loading screen

WinXP Home
AMD XP2400
Asus Nforce2 Mobo
1GB DDR200 memory
Radeon 9700PRO Card

I booted my PC last night to find that when it gets to the Windows XP loading screen the progress bar moves quite slowly, and regularly stops and restarts.

Once done the screen goes black, the monitor powers off and then comes back on, and I am eventually taken to muy desktop.

I then find that when I move the mouse around the desktop it regularly stops and then starts again, and folders are taking much longer to open then normal.

I loaded a game to find that this too was very choppy and almost unplayable.

I checked EVENT VIEWER to find several errors from the morning referring to DISK DRIVE 0 (HDD) (cannot remember exact message, now at work).

I uninstalled and reinstalled the graphics card just incase it was graphics driver issues but this has not helped.

Any thoughts (I suspect possible HDD failure)?

I have up to date AV and up to data ADAWARE but these find no virus/spyware.

Cheers for that but does it really sound like spyware/malware? It sounded more like HW to me (I will try these removal tools tonight, ta!)

spyware/malware is probably the easiest place to start (plus, it can't hurt to run the scans either)

if you still think it could be a failing hard disk, run chkdsk

Cheers Chezdez, I will try this tonight and if not go via HDD!
