Slow copying to USB Hard Drive

I have just installed (attached) a Maxtor 250Gb USB HD to my son's Imac G4 (OSX) for back-ups etc. We tried to copy a large music file (11.5Gb) and it says it needs around 5 hours to copy. This seems extraordinarily long.

Can anyone suggest why this might be please?

It could be USB 1.1.

Don't try to run anything else at the same time, just let it copy.

Also, when copying very large files I've noticed that the estimated time can vary, it's a bit like a car's computer when you get different readouts going uphill and downhill.

I'm afraid I know nothing about Macs, I presume they have USB and thats how its connected, by the time you have listed if this is the case I would think its running at USB 1 speeds and since I know nothing about them I have no idea of how you can speed it up to USB 2.0. Or even if you can. Sorry.
