slow bootup

From switching on my PC and waiting for it to boot-up Windows 98, it takes around 6 minutes and in that time it seems to read the CD/DVD drive 61 times. Although there is no CD present.

Any suggestions as to how I can speed the start-up process?

You could try going to control panel then to system then device manager opening the CD/DVD rom drive and switching off the 'auto insert notification' and seeing if this speeds things up.
