Expecting another 10 updates tonight from microsoft so remember to update them as well.

Check your air vents are clear of dust and fluff if so inside will need a good clean out as well.
Check Device manager and make sure that there is no yellow exclamation marks beside any of your drivers.
Download the free version of Malwarebytes update then run it to see if it finds any problems.

What security programs have you got including your Firewall.

Regarding CCleaner, be careful with it as some of its defaults are highly dangerous IMO. It does everything, but often you don't want it to do everything.

MSCONFIG: similarly, disabling 'everything' is dodgy. Try and work out what you regularly use and retain them - allowing for if it's acceptable to wait slightly longer to run on demand.

Disk cleanup and defragmentation are wise advice.

Not covered above is adjusting your Service settings. click here read the preliminary advice and make the necessary adjustments between 'Default XP Pro' and 'Safe' settings at least, with an eye on the tweaked settings. Click the name of the service for a closer discussion of what each service does. Sometimes you can go further than advised and sometimes you'd prefer to keep them at their defaults. Again, this is an area that can go wrong with a poor choice, so always err on the safe side if in doubt.

Lastly, it might be worth keep track of the timings for shutdown and start-up (until the bulk of disk activity has completed). It's often difficult to detect whether any difference has occurred. This will give you some objectivity.
