slow audio - soundcard or codec problem?

All sound on my pc is playing slowly. It doesn't matter if it's a dvd or iTunes, the audio drops a tone in pitch. I figure it's got to be a sound card or codec problem, but haven't the faintest idea of how to fix it. (my soundcard is a 'Realtek AC 97 Audio for VIA R Audio Controller')
Any ideas are gratefully received.
Thanks!

First of all its not slow, it has it pitch dropped which doesn't (or at least should) effect the speed, but it will sound odd.

Open the Realtek Sound Effect Manger - maybe in the sytem tray or also possible from the control panel.

Go to the "Sound Effect" tab and you'll see a something like:

Key
? Reset.

I suspect from what you describe that the ? is showing as -1 or -2. Change it to ) or click Reset and you should be back to normal.

Sorry, should have put "change it to 0"
