Slow access to disk drives

My machine has recently stared a "go slow"! Open Windows Explorer and "My Computer" and it takes about 30 seconds to display the contents of the various drives. Once that has been done, the sub-directories can be opened as usual.

Similarly, opening My Computer or Control Panel takes an age for the screen to populate.

Any ideas? The thought of overheating crossed my mind - how can you tell if that's a problem?

Machine is a 1.3Athlon with 512GB RAM, two disc drives, one 20 meg for programs, one 80 meg for data. Both have been defragged using Norton. Chekdisc shows no problems. Machine is homenetworked to a second machine.
