Slaving an old HDD

  starslayer 23:24 31 Jan 03

Hey there. I'm building a system using a new 40GB HDD and intend to use W98, but I want to see if I can retrieve some files from a 4GB HDD which ran under W95. Will it be as simple as slaving the old to the new and dragging and dropping my files? I ask because I'm a little worried having heard that W98 and 95 use different formatting systems, and am also wondering if modern systems will accept very small HDDs. Hope someone can help...

Programs and System files will not but you should be able to copy E-Mail etc

If your 95 is 95b you should be alright as this is fat32.

Win98 should also read fat16 or 95a.

Modern systems will cope with 4gig hard drives no problem.

Strange as tonight I had a friend whose 40gig went belly up a few days ago, waiting for warranty.

The only thing we had spare were a couple of 530mb hard disks, about 6 years old. We put 98se on one and kept the other for storing data. Both are working fine!!!!!!!!!!
