A mate has a Dodgy hard drive and I have transplanted it into my computer as a slave to try and save some of his files.

It is detected in the BIOS and is detected in device manager but without a letter assigned.

It does not appear in my computer.

I have checked the master/ slave jumpers/

I have tried Master with Slave Present on the main drive,

Its a Win 98SE system

Thanks

You could try downloading a disk testing tool form the manufacturers web site and run that to confirm the current state. The one's I've used create a bootable floppy.

Sounds like it's dead though.

have you rebooted? your lastdrive isn't set to d or e is it?

Yep tried rebooting,

The thing that puzzles me is that Both Master & Slave can be seen in Device Manager, but the slave has not been allocated a drive letter and you are unable to manually assign one.
