Hi all , i have just bought a 80 gig hard drive to back up my 40 gig that is already installed, it is fitted in but needs formatting and a letter assigned to it, can anyone tell me where to start,i thought that xp would automatically find it and give me the option to format, but no, i am using windows xp pro, thanks

Go to Start > Run > Copy and Paste (or type):


You should see your new Hard drive listed as "disk 1"

Right Click and choose "FORMAT" and follow the instructions. A letter will also be assinged during this.

Get the drive recognised in the BIOS of the PC. Boot up XP and in the run command type "Diskmgmt.msc" without the quotes. You can right click the new drive and format.
