Thanks Andy but I have checked all the drivers and they are all ok. I have not installed anything for ages and this problem only occured in the last couple of days. I am having to turn my machine off by switching it off manually. Is this doing any damage to my computer. The scan disc comes on every time I boot up.

First try the system restore option in XP since this only started a few days ago. If that does not correct the issue insert the XP Cd and boot from the CD and carry out the Repair function.

If you have the XP cd then try the System File Checker

Put your windows CD into the CD ROM and hold the shift key (the one with arrow pointing up, just above the Ctrl key on the left of your keyboard). Holding shift for a few seconds will stop the Windows CD from auto running, but the drive will still spin up to read the disk then spin back down again. Once it has spun down you can release the shift key.

Now click Start/All Programs/Accessories and choose Command Prompt. Type in

sfc /scannow

and hit enter. This will check and replace any damaged system files.
