Shutting down of Windows XP Home

My computer has not been shutting down, instead all that happens is the egg timer appears so I shut it down by switching it off. I installed Service Pack 2 a couple of months ago, no problems with that, I keep my virus software (Norton) up to date and have not installed any other programs that may cause any conflicts. Does anyone know why it won't shut down plse???

May be worth a shut down via the task manager to see if any different. Also when doing a startup keep pressing the F8 KEY till the list comes up.Choose or go for startup by the last known good configuration.See how it turns out for normal shutdown then.
