Shutting background applications in XP

I am trying to prepare my Pc to do some video editing. Does anyone know of a free software program that will close or help close the background applications that are running, before I capture the video. I understand that doing this will ensure better quality.

Ctrl - Alt - Delete and click APPLICATIONS. That will shutdown programs. Highlight the program and click END TASK.

Also programs maybe starting when the computer starts, to stop this from happening. Start > Run > Type: MSCONFIG > Click STARTUP and remove the ticks. To see what you are stopping from starting click here

Services will run when windows starts but some are not necessary
