shutdown problems

Whenever I shutdown my computer it goes through the motions until it comes to the screen showing the phrase windows is now shutting down and then it stops. I then have to just switch it off using the power button on the tower or the plug. It must finish all processes as I then have no problems starting it up again.
I have been running this computer with this problem for a couple of years now but it has now started bugging me and I would like to solve it.
Can anyone help?

Maybe something similar to what anskyber could be referring to.

Possibly a srtup program refusing to shut down correctly.
Try this:

Start/Run and type MSCONFIG and enter and select startup, untick everything except your AV and firewall and reboot.

If this works and eventually shuts down,i think we can say its a startup program that may be the problem.

However,it may be something totally different, but at least we can eliminate this first.
