shut down problem - norton one button check up

windows xp/norton system works one button check up.
after the auto scheduled one button check up runs the computer will not shut down and hangs. any clues to why, and how to rectify this?

Personally I would uninstall norton and let xp look after itself without relying on 3rd party software.

In the past norton utilities and crash guard have caused as many problems as purported to have fixed.

thanks for advice and you are probably right, but I would still like to find out what is causing the problem

There are a few applications that actually change windows system files on installation, the 2 most common are norton and aol, I have seen problems go away after uninstalling these programes.
