Boots up OK. On Shutdown gets right to "Windows is shutting down" and then hangs. I have to turn off by mains switch. It is OK when I next restart.

Try this first. Go to Control Panel\Sounds if there is a Speaker icon by the Exit Windows, Remove it as it may be corrupt sound file. Which version of 98 do you have, to find out right click My Computer\Properties. It will tell you if it is 98 or 98se

Hi Ninelens. Did you solve the problem? There are some Windows 98se systems in which there is no solution to the shutdown problem. Windows 98 was written in the days when a 266Mhz Pentium was considered to be fast, and the shutdown procedure often just can't cope with the speeds we take for granted these days. A lot of people just have to hit the Off button.
