Shortcuts not working

Some, but not all of of my shortcuts have stopped working. They no longer launch the applications they are supposed to. They do nothing. Clicking on the target file of the shortcut also does nothing. It is most perturbing.
An example:
Click on the shortcut for Photoshop CS2 and nothing happens.
Go to program files>adobe>Photoshop CS2>Photoshop (the target), and clicking on that does not start Photoshop.
Right clicking on a photograph and selecting Open with Photoshop CS2, opens photoshop perfectly and displays the image.
Windows media player is the same. to open it I have to right click an MP3 file, which opens and plays the Mp3. What on earth is going on?

I think there is a gremlin inside the computer who kicks the chips and wees on the complicated bits. When I catch him I shall employ a bulldog clip in a very novel way about his personage. I bet he is called Gilbert, and makes his own pack lunches.

This may be a mouse problem. Try right-clicking a shortcut and chosing "Open". If that works then try changing the double-click speed in Mouse Properties in Control Panel.
