shortcuts to drives opening Windows search

My 3 week old XPSP2 machine, previously working a dream, has developed some odd quirks. I have 4 drives ( 2 real, 2 partitioned) and shortcuts to open them. Now clicking on them opens the Windows search facility.
Also, the machine occasionally shuts down, or tells me it has recovered from a major fault, and wanting to send an error report, which refers to 2 files in a deep ish directory called WERec80dir00, which it has then deleted.
I run Windows Defender, and virus protection, which is up to date.
O wise Technogurus, help, please

What changes did you make since your computer was "previously working a dream"? New drivers? New software? New Hardware?

Gee - you guys are great, to quote our American friends. Shortcut fix worked a treat.
Now about the other problem....?
